How Many Donor Eggs Do I Need?

The number of donor eggs needed depends on your family-building goal, existing embryos, fresh or frozen eggs, and the attrition assumptions used for planning. This calculator provides an educational planning range, not a guarantee of outcome.

What is a donor egg planning calculator?

A donor egg planning calculator estimates how many donor eggs may be needed to work toward a desired family-building goal. It uses a configurable planning model that accounts for expected losses between eggs, fertilization, blastocyst development, and existing embryos.

Important: This is an educational planning tool only. It does not predict pregnancy or live birth and should not replace individualized medical advice.

Methodology

How the calculation works

The calculator starts with the number of blastocysts used as an educational planning target for the selected family goal. Existing embryos are then considered before estimating the donor eggs needed.

Donor eggs needed ≈ Additional blastocysts needed ÷ Egg survival × fertilization × blastocyst development

Because each stage can involve attrition, the calculator displays low, base, and higher planning scenarios rather than presenting one number as a guaranteed requirement.

The planning assumptions are configurable. If a clinic or medical reviewer provides approved rates, those values can be entered in the optional assumptions section.

What can change the result?

Family size goal

Planning for two children generally requires a larger embryo planning target than planning for one child.

Existing embryos

Existing usable embryos can reduce the number of additional donor eggs included in the planning calculation.

Fresh or frozen eggs

Frozen eggs may involve a thaw-survival stage, while fresh eggs do not require that same planning step. .

Laboratory attrition

Fertilization and blastocyst-development rates can vary between individuals, laboratories, protocols, and clinical circumstances.

Donor age

Donor age is included as contextual information. This calculator does not convert donor age into an exact success percentage.

Clinic-specific data

Medically reviewed clinic-specific laboratory rates may produce a different planning range from the illustrative defaults. .

How to interpret your result

Use the egg range as a planning starting point rather than a fixed number of eggs you must purchase or receive. The low, base, and higher scenarios illustrate how different attrition assumptions can change the number.

  • A higher egg requirement does not mean that a treatment cycle will necessarily have a poor outcome.
  • A lower egg requirement does not guarantee a pregnancy or live birth.
  • Existing embryos can change the additional number of eggs needed for planning.
  • Your fertility specialist and embryology laboratory can provide clinical rates that may be more appropriate for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ans. There is no universal number of donor eggs that guarantees one child. The number needed for planning can vary based on egg survival, fertilization, embryo development, existing embryos, and individual clinical factors.
Ans. A two-child family-building goal may require a larger embryo planning target than a one-child goal. The calculator uses the selected family goal to create an educational planning range.
Ans. Frozen donor eggs have an additional thaw-survival stage in the planning model. Fresh eggs do not require that same thaw step. Actual laboratory outcomes depend on the specific program and clinical circumstances.
Ans. They can. If existing embryos are available for the family-building goal, the calculator subtracts them from the educational blastocyst planning target before estimating additional donor eggs.
Ans. No. This calculator is for educational planning only. It does not predict pregnancy, implantation, miscarriage, or live birth and should not be treated as a medical recommendation.
